I had this aunt, her name was Fern. Sweetest lady you could ever known. She loved having kids around her but never had any of her own.

She was married to a boy named Wally just before he was sent off to fight in WWI. He never came back. On her own, she managed the farm and the house and then when her parents died, she managed the store they had owned as well. Never remarried, and never had kids.

She died three years ago at the age of 105. One of the last times I saw her, I asked her how she was doing and she said with a smirk..."I think God forgot about me, honey..."

I'm thinking about her a lot today, I'm not quite sure why that is. Her life was tragic but she was so full of happiness and life, even past 100. I look at my life and the time we live in and think about how fortunate I am. The tremendous support system around me that never fails, and the unconditional love that is reaffirmed everytime I look into the eyes of anyone in my family. I am truly blessed.

That love, my gram told me, that my Aunt Fern had for Uncle Wally stayed with her through the years. People criticized her for never moving on, for never having a new life for herself, and she would just smile. My Gram told me that when you give your heart away like that, it's no longer yours to give to another. I'd like to believe that. My romantic heart would like to believe that there is that person, that one human being that will overwhelm me to the point of no return.

And I hope, once that happens, I will allow him to love me...

QUESTION: What is the most romantic act you have had done for you or you have done for another?

I baked a cake once. I've sent flowers. I've made other things, which may or may not be construed as romantic. whatever

I envy you your family, for the most part. You have a love there that I didn't see in my family. You're truly a lucky girl.

Romantic act...hmm. There's a tough question.

I once took my girlfriend to this atrocious top 40 type pop concert that she reeeeeally reeeeeally wanted to go to even though I absolutely loathed every single performer on the bill. I bought the tickets, took her to dinner...the whole nine yards. I couldn't stand a single moment of that concert and she knew it, but I didn't make a fuss, I just stood there by her side and let her enjoy the show. She appreciated it so much and that made it all worthwhile.

I guess that was pretty romantic?
