I've got an experience that goes against the presumption that getting physical can ruin a friendship....
There was one girl that I had been friends with in class, and we had this fierce sensual undercurrent running through whenever we talked and it made for the usual awkwardness. Eventually, she asked me out on an official date. (Which really got me, since it's so rare for a girl to make the first move on me.)
The party we went to was a lot of fun, but the evening ended up a total disaster. There was simply no physical chemistry between us and it began to feel like she was my sister. Ater that night, however, we ended up becoming better friends than ever before.
In order to have a true friendship, we had to first get over the hump (so to speak) of sexual tension. Once we realized that it wasn't going to work physically, we could focus on our mental chemistry. Nowadays she lives in a faraway land, and we have this great relationship where we write lengthy letters on a regular basis and bare our souls to each other, rather than our naughty parts.

Actually, don't listen to me. Friendships that turn sexual almost always get weird and then someone wants things to go back to the way things were, which is impossible. I'd delete everything I just typed, but I'm too damn lazy.
