I was just reading some of the Washington Post coverage of the election in the US. Young people did not vote, which they never do. Also, people are placing more importance on moral issues and terrorism than on anything else. And by moral issues they mean issues concerning the freedom of minorities, not only gays and racial minorities but also religious minorities and intelectual minorities like myself, that expect politics to be secular. I do not want politically-elected official making policy that goes against civic liberties, even if it goes against their religious beliefs.
George W. Bush is currently the leader in the US because most of the South and the middle part of the US is for limiting civil liberties in the name of faith, and that is wrong.
I feel depressed, because I do not understand why people are turning to the right, this is so different from what life was not that long ago.
On a happier note, people in Puerto Rico voted against Pedro Rosello, who was the governor of my country for 8 years, and during that time goverment behaved in a corrupt way. Even after a lot of politicians appointed by him were arrested and convicted for corruption, he was the favorite to win again the governorship. I was more optimistic of the chances that Kerry had, but still Anibal Acevedo Vila won over Rosello to become Puerto Rico's newest governor. So at least something good came out of last tuesday.
