You know how the secret service has code names for the President and First Lady? Well, you get a code name even when you're a candidate. And according to tradition, they always make the pair of code names begin with the same letter.

For example, Bill Clinton was "Eagle" (despite the popular belief that he was Elvis, it's just not true). Hillary Clinton is "Evergreen".

John McCain is "Phoenix" which I guess is appropriate for more than one reason. His wife Cindy is code-named "Parasol".

Barack Obama is "Renegade". How fucking cool is that shit? Michelle is "Renaissance", which is also cool. Their names collectively seem to embody how I feel they'll handle the position. And that's exactly what we need.

In other news, watching "Top Gun" makes me feel old. Because the planes they fly in that film (the F-14 Tomcat) have been retired from service now for some time. The decision was made in 1994 and it was phased out over time. The very last Tomcats to serve the Navy retired in 2006, but for all intents and purposes they haven't been widely used now for a decade.

The aircraft carrier shown in the film is the USS Enterprise and is now one of the oldest carriers in the fleet. She is scheduled for decommissioning some time in 2012-2014.

That, and Meg Ryan has "big 80's hair" in the film. eeek Incidentally am I the only one who wishes Meg had played the love-interest "Charlie" character rather than the very over-rated Kelly McGillis? Oh well.

Speaking of "Top Gun", I imagine most of you didn't know who Maverick's new 'RIO" is at the end of the movie. An officer with the call-sign "Merlin", played by Tim Robbins. Bet you didn't know he was in that movie.
