Rhode Island is pretty much one big "hometown" really.

It's all the same, only the names will change
Every day it seems we're wasting away
Another place where the faces are so cold
I'd drive all night just to get back home
Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it's not for days
And the people I meet always go their separate ways
Sometimes you tell the day
By the bottle that you drink
And times when you're alone all you do is think
I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I'm wanted dead or alive

Okay okay okay, so I'm not a REAL cowboy. In fact, being from New England I think there is some kind of law against even suggesting any cowboyish affiliations. I'm not wanted either. But aside from those minor issues the rest of those lyrics really remind me of my life out here on the highways.

Yesterday a friend asked me about my sleeping habits, and then when I heard this song I identified with it for the first time ever... despite it being pretty old AND the theme song to my favorite television show ("Deadliest Catch"). So yeah, there are times when it is really difficult to sleep when I SHOULD sleep. Other times I am dead tired and I have to keep going. It sucks. In fact, there are so many major disadvantages to my job I (and others) often wonder why I actually enjoy it so much too. It's for weekends like this one. A 1500 mile trip and 3 days to do it in. It's a decent paycheck and honestly it isn't very hard either. I did 1300 miles in two days leaving me just a few hours of work tomorrow and time to catch up on sleep, gaming, reading, and general relaxation.

So I'm seeing the "other" Texas this time. Destination: El Paso. Very different from eastern Texas, which in general is pretty green. I don't mean to suggest that it is New England green by any stretch of the imagination... but it is also no desert. On the other hand, the further west you go the more it starts to look like Death Valley. Watch "Kill Bill 2" and see where Sidewinder lives for a peek. It was pretty hot today also and I stopped a number of times to check my tires and give them a few minutes to cool down (and to hit the rest area men's rooms).

Speaking of men's rooms... all of you with "normal" lives take many things for granted. Such as always having easy access to a bathroom. Even when you're traveling this is rarely a problem because you could really get off at virtually any exit and find a McDonald's or Wal Mart or somewhere with a john. It's not so easy when you live in a big truck. No... there is no bathroom in there. (Although I have occasionally considered buying a portable commode for emergencies). What do you do when your stomach starts that rumble and the next rest area is 112 miles away? I'll tell you what you do... you start eating Pepto Bismol chewable tablets like they were potato chips. Seriously. Yeah, think about that the next time you take a shit.

Tonight I'm in Pecos, TX. Punch that into http://maps.google.com/ and have a looksee. Or get directions to there from Prescott, Arkansas which is where I spent last night and you can see the trip I made today. Except that I went straight through Dallas rather than take the loop around because it's the weekend and traffic wasn't much of a concern.

hope:
I know about travel, very well actually. Since '94 my family and I have drivin back and forth from out various homes to Ontario. We're usually in the car for 13 hours each day, and it takes a lot of adjusting. But the shitting part...well, I know it all too well. I cannot do my business on the road. I don't even like going at my friend's houses. It's just a comfort thing for me. I went to Banff Alberta with my class once for a week, and let me tell you, it was hella difficult... oi! haha

But you're right, I have way too many materialistic things, but I also have a lot of stuff that I adore that is just sentimental crap. Like my plants and photo albums and novels. I'm sure I could do without the computer and small tv and cd player...but I need something to keep my mind busy on rainy days, right?

I'm watching Where The Buffalo Roam right now. The last time I watched this was with my boyfriend in Winnipeg....I miss those days.
