Today was a good day. None of the bullshit (in other words, traffic) I had to deal with on Saturday. It was pretty much rolling at the speed limit for the entire 540'ish miles of today's leg of the journey. Staying tonight at the Flying J in Brunswick, GA and that leaves about 5 hours worth of driving to get to Tampa... more or less....

Well, I got lucky in that the insanely loud truck that had pulled in next to me stayed for about an hour and then left. Which was an indescribable relief because then the trucks on either side of me were NOT running (and not refrigerator trucks either) and we all enjoyed a nice quiet night's sleep.

Today sucked pretty bad though. I've been driving ALL...

Well I guess that blows. You're still making a lot more doing your 380 miles than I do at my wage slave job. Got a message on my machine yesterday that I had missed this orientation for NETTTS that noone seems to have seen fit to inform me of beforehand. I might have to defer two weeks till the next class start but they told me to call monday and I might still be able to start when I wanted to. I hope I can since yankee candle shuts down for the week of the fourth and I was looking forward to a week of just classes and not work and classes. Whatever happens is not ultimately a big deal and if nothing else next week i'll look for a job that's closer to home than YC and doesn't leave the heavy scent impression. Yankee candle employs its own drivers but apperently it's damn hard to get in there.

Well, breath of a thousand camels, and all that.

Well, since I spent a couple days broken down and not earning any money, I decided to work over the long holiday weekend. I got a 1200 mile trip which is fine and dandy... but I've got 4 days to do it and that is a pretty slow pace. Guess I can't complain too much though. I'm headed for Florida. Do you suppose the crowds...

I dont know why, but it seemed to me when ever I had like 4 days to run 1200 miles I would wind up running like 700 miles the last day.

Out at Jubitz in portland I had this swift driver with this old ratted out pete pull in next to me, his stack ligned right up with the vent window on my sleeper then he set that thing up on high idle about 1700 rpm, I was lucky it was so loud or I would have probably died from smoke inhalation. I literally had to get out of the truck in my underwear while the fans were running because I couldnt breathe.

Well, last night I drove into the Freightliner dealer. This morning when they opened they looked over my truck. Long story short is that it wont be ready to roll again until Thursday morning. So I'm spending the next two nights in the Days Inn nearby. Several places to eat within walking distance. The company will pay me back for the hotel room at least.

frown that sucks....

Anyway...I got the prints and I'll send them tomorrow morning. biggrin

Bummer, been right there, hanging out at a repair shop sucks. Atleast you didnt come in on a hook though.

Well, I was supposed to be in Cleveland by Tuesday, noon. Instead I'm parked right outside the (closed) Freightliner dealer in New Haven, Connecticut because my truck's engine is fucked up.

On the brighter side of things, at least I don't have to work all night long. Going to sleep right now, in fact. I guess this is what I get for complaining about a...

Well, time off always goes by too quickly. When I called in this morning at 8am and they didn't immediately have a reload for me I knew that was going to be trouble. Generally that means getting a brokered load from folks who are not my company's ordinary customers. So I'll be making a pickup tonight at 8pm in eastern Connecticut and it'll be due...

Hmmm, I've been thinking about getting Irish citizenship for a while...

It's funny, a few of my firends have had kids recently and I find myself wondering if I could continue to do the work I do and raise a family. It's pretty wierd to think that something I want to have will eventually cause me to leave something I've worked hard at and really enjoy.

Well, I got home. A little bit later than I was expecting but I guess I shouldn't complain. I'll have a bona fide two days off which doesn't happen too frequently for me. Usually it's like a day and a half. But this weekend I'm not getting back into that truck until Monday morning.

Got a few things to do but nothing incredibly important. I...

Kick starters have gradually been eclipsed over the years. I don't know offhand whether any bikes in production today still have them. Actulally come to think of it, there's Royal Enfield, which makes reproductions of WWII era bikes so at least there are those. I wouldn't be surprised if there are others, and probably some dirt bikes. But I'm not really anything resembling an expert, i've actually only been riding for a year now.

I'm not sure about that. Soccer violence tends to be more about the dire conditions of the lives of the combatants than the sport itself. The stuff that goes on in South America is not much different than our own gang violence, and much of what happens in Europe is about racist/nationalist factions and other extremists looking for an opportunity to mess with lots of people at once. Although they may pretend it's about the team, hooligans and groups like barra brava are all about themselves. The fans in Chicago who try to burn down their own city whenever the Bulls win a title scare me far more than the predictable and avoidable soccer violence.

I have a long day of driving tomorrow, which is the price I am paying for knocking off a bit early today. But... I'll take a long shower in my preferred truck stop chain (Flying J). Had a good meal (good being a relative term when you're talking about truck stop food), got a good parking spot (meaning no one can block me in by...

A rather ordinary week. I'll make a delivery and re-load tomorrow in the Lexington area and will be bringing it back to Connecticut. It's still undecided if I'll get to go home to Providence this weekend or not. It'll largely depend on what our customers have for freight on Friday versus Monday. Would be nice to have a day or two off though since I'm...

Can we please have some "stuff" that isn't fuckin' Made in China? I swear, we are completely saturated and it is going to be a massive problem pretty soon. People aren't even aware of how serious an issue it is for us to be so unbelievably dependent upon other countries, and that one in particular.

America will not survive another 200 years. And if it...

Here's what irritates me today:

I spent about 4 hours at home yesterday. That was it. First time I'd been by the house in 3 weeks. I don't particularly mind the 3 weeks out at all, in fact I requested the third week. But by not getting an actual weekend off it has essentially turned into 4 weeks out on the road. Anyhow, my delivery...

I know most of you car drivers often want to pass us big-trucks. That's fine, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do this... and lately I have been seeing more and more of the wrong way. You friggin' car drivers are dangerous, sometimes without even realizing what danger you're putting yourselves and the professional truckers in. So please pay attention...

Ford Escort the car. Bad Stretch of 91 north between Springfield and Chicopee. New England has all kindsa things in it to make one straddle the fence as to whether it's a good place to live and work.

All sage advice. I don't know what the rest of the country's like, but I can't imagine how annoying it must be to drive a truck in RI. I used to drive 24 ft rentals frequently in a past life and I spent most of my time screaming and swearing.
