So on Friday I lost my ability to carry hazardous materials. It's not really THAT big of a deal because my company doesn't deal with that cargo anyhow. And I'll regain the authorization to carry them again. But I've got to jump through a few hoops first.

I'll also say that after more than a decade away, on Friday I (finally) became an official Rhode...

So.

I've sorta had a plan regarding SG for a while now. That plan was to keep my subscription active as long as Eli remained here. Seeing as that time may be drawing to a close, I'm contemplating my own future existence here. Perhaps the grass is greener on the other side...

Yeah, my reasons for staying here have gotten progressively smaller, so I know what you mean. It's too bad you never made an sgpvd event, you might've had more incentive to stay.
hope:
what?! NO!!! Don't leave! Why are you and J.R. talking about departing? This saddens me....you may not get to see bathtub pictures if you go! hahaha Seriously though...this is upsetting, dude

So there I was, driving down the highway as usual. I'm getting passed by a truck with the logo of the "Batesville Casket Company". What a morbid business to be in. Frankly I've never really understood the point of a fancy coffin anyhow considering (a) you're DEAD so it isn't as if you can enjoy it, and (b) other people only briefly see the thing...

I agree completely. This is also why Jews are buried in a plain, pine coffin. No satin cushions on the inside, no platinum detail on the outside. Nice and simple, the way a burial should be.
obeypabst:
When I go, I want all my friends to put something in my coffin. I don't want anything fancy.

But if I don't go off to where-ever (if there is a where-ever) prepared, my boy scout leader would come back from his grave and kick my ass. Did that make any sense?

That is why there better be a can of PBR and a hundred dollar bill in my coffin. Who knows, maybe there is poker in the afterlife??!!?!?

PS - i am pretty jaded on religion as well. i am a scientist. prove to me there is something out there and i might start believing, until then, I have ideas....

So I had 3 and a half days off. And no matter how much time, it never feels like enough. Usually when I come home there is just a ton of stuff to do and this holiday time was no exception. I spent Thanksgiving day visiting my best friend Andre and his family. Was a great time, especially since I hadn't seen them in quite...

I was just doing some random driving today, and got held up by a couple of bulls that had gotten out of their enclosure and were out in the road. The police and the bulls' owners were trying to herd them back where they belonged, and the bulls eventually just decided to cooperate.
dashiznit:
Sorry I missed you over the weekend dear...was out of state for thanksgiving but give me a ring again soon so we can yak!

I know I've said this before, so at the risk of sounding like a broken record:

I'd like to extend a big Fuck You to all the folks throwing trash out their car windows. You're the reason half of this country looks like a shithole. And this is my workplace, you fucks. I swear to freakin' god I want to find out where YOU work...

I have a hard time with "trucker bombs"-I suspect. it's dope couriers more likely, not wanting to stop, truckers could always dump a bottle at their next fuel stop-amen to the trash dumpers, used pampers are particularly nice- frown

I watched the Army-Notre Dame game, man, I don't know how they'll do against Navy-but I can always hope, huh?

Good to hear from you-Happy Thanksgiving-

Go Army- wink ARRR!!!
rizzo:
actually, our store was not mobbed on Friday. it was busy, but not as busy as it should have been. hope you had a good thanksgiving!

Generally speaking, I like what I do. I enjoy being on the move and having a schedule that keeps everything interesting. Each day a different place. It keeps away that boredom that causes me to do things like seek other jobs due to simple tedium. But the hours genuinely suck. I work more than ANYBODY else I know. Typical work weeks are 80-100 hours if...

Thanks. Sfik can always be bought; 130-140K for a nice Kenworth or Pete. From what I gather from the older instructors here truckers used to be a much more highly regarded group of people than they are now. Culture changes and there's not much you can really do about it, except to be gracious and professional yourself.
dr_lizardo:
That's pretty much what I've thought about whatever they govern your speed at, just get up to that speed, set your cruise control, and go. Some guys are real committed to using the gearbox though. I woud imagine that it might be rather disconcerting at first if you've always been using downshifts to slow down, to then rely on the automatic transmission to do that for you, and to not know exactlly what it's doing and not be in direct control of it. On the other h and if you have to stop real quickly maybe it would be better to have the transmission taking care of those downshifts.

Woah. That is nice. A gift to yourself for being "good"?

Do you spend lots of money being a truck driver?

I spend money like a jackass.

Damn, how big is your truck if you have room to mount that?

biggrin

Have you seen that television commercial for the car that can parallel park itself?

Yeah. Is this really a good idea? I mean, we already have more than our share of people on the road with no fucking clue what they are doing. A car that can perform what is frankly a very basic maneuver for you seems to condone ignorance. As if it doesn't...

I've gotten pretty decent at parallel parking the big rigs. Which is a bit of an Irony considering how I never used to try parallel parking a car if I could avoid it.

I am not at all confident that technology will not eventually eliminate my career. It seems that man is well on the way to making himself obsolete. What will there be for people to do when machines can do everything better and more cheaply than we can? Yes, I am something of a luddite.

One of the videos we saw in class was about future technology, and there was a brief bit showing some guys developing robotically driven trucks. It struck me that what those men were doing was basically working to put the equivalent of all the people in a medium sized city out of work.

I'm only counting on maybe ten years before technology wipes out my job. Subsequent to that I'll probably go back to school and be a college professor, or something like that.

There are days when I've been working almost forever. Began my Thursday at 6am and was just finishing up my drive by half past midnight. Was getting pretty difficult to stay alert during those last couple of hours.

Now that I'm not rolling, I can't fall asleep. Sucks. And makes tomorrow that much worse.

Wow, so many cool Halloween photos out there in SG land.

I myself dressed up as a truck driver. Didn't get any treats however.

There are only like 5 things you can do in Findlay, Ohio.

1. Eat boring ass american cuisine. Hardly ANY ethic food joints at all. Taco Bell is considered "ethnic".
2. Buy things at the mall or Walmart.
3. Drink lots of beer.
4. Do lots of drugs.
5. Fuck lots and make lots of babie.

Seriously though, no culture, no diversity, nada. Just lots of white blue collar people passing the time by. Lots of people watch LOTS of TV.

Findlay bores me.

So I extended my time at home, somewhat against my better judgement. Now I have an extremely long day of driving ahead of me... and I'm even procrastinating about that because I'd really like to get an eggplant and sun-dried tomato omelette at the Modern Diner. And "fall back" sucks by the way. I mean... one extra hour of sleep once a year isn't enough...
