Well my company has declared me "driver of the month" for January. I guess I must be pretty good at my job. Second time I've had that honor in two years, in fact. I wish I got something for it more substantial than a cheesy $50 savings bond however. Meh.

ATTABOY! <<slaps on back>>

One very minor advantage of working for the huge compnies is that you have a makedly better shot at winning a million bucks than the general public does, one in severl thousand versus one in several million.
dr_lizardo:
I'll just have to learn as much as I can about the ins and outs of o/o-hood. I suspect that it might be possible for it to be more lucrative for both the driver and the company to have the driver pay for the truck. I don't KNOW that, but I suspect the possibility.

In school it was explained to me that companies are all over the palce in terms of how much they offer their o/o's in addition to rate per mile. Fuel surcharges, accountants, repair discounts and so forth. Swift drivers pay 1.30 a gallon for their diesel wherever they get it, and your'e eligible to become an o/o after 8 mos with the company. and that's what I know about swift.

Whatever, just have to gather all the info I can.

A month in the life of a truck driver.

I had more time off in December than is typical. For Christmas I was home for 4 days. It didn't seem like it because I was busy running around or visiting family most of the time. And I was just home for another 2.5 days around the New Year. Ordinarily I take about 2-3 days off...

Thanks. Tha's about how I've surmised what I'll be doing with my wed-fri. I've had jobs all up and down the love/hate scale. But so far none have paid real well. Well, getting time to have at it.
figmentation:
if you're gonna do it, do it right.

I don't really understand the big deal surrounding New Years. It's just another day off for me... for which I'm grateful... don't get me wrong. I just don't see what all the fuss is about.
kiora:
hehe wink

New years is overrated. I normaly don't celebrate it at all. This year I didn't really have a choice but it turned out ok wink No drama, no fights or nothing biggrin

Back on the road again. Had 4 days off and it felt like 1.

More later.

"Why I hate Christmas", by Eli.

My dislike for this holiday has nothing to do with the fact that I'm not a Christian. In fact, it applies more or less equally to Chanukkah or any of the multi-cultural holidays that have seemed to sprout up in recent years. But even though I say I am not... my family (historically at least) follows the Christmas traditions....

i'd like to get some ink at some point, but I'll have to design some kind of narrow tattoo for my toothpick arms.

I went to Brian for one of my tattoos and he did a pretty good job.
Mike's neck tattoos kinda intimidate me... blush

So last night I attend my company's Christmas party. It's supposedly a big deal because the last time they threw one was over a decade ago. Or something. So knowing that, I thought it might be nice to attend. There were also rumors going around that the owner / President was going to retire and hand the reigns over to his son. That didn't end...

I'm pretty strapped for cash right now, but if you still have it in a month or so I'd be interested.
dr_lizardo:
Just my cdl and a notebook. They won't have a trainer available until several days after orientation, so I'll be coming back home. It will actually be convenient that my trainer will pick me up here so that I shan't have to drive back and forth to syracuse to get my car and/or truck. Werner trucking sent a list of stuff to bring when you went to their orientation that you would need to have on the road, and I would imagine that the swift duffle bag content recommendations will be similar. Coat, week's worth of underwear, toothbrush, that sort of thing. No firearms, though, at least if you go with Werner. Bummer. And I so wanted to bring my AK. . .

I don't really have a whole lot to report. I'm working a lot and don't expect to go home again before the Christmas weekend. Which is fine since I don't really give much of a shit about Christmas anyhow. Did all my shopping already... which consisted of gifts for two nieces and a birthday present for my mother (who is unfortunate enough to have her...

Well, those names have been flitting about whole while I've been in school. There's a story of one guy who wanted schneider but they wouldn't take him becasue he had a felony conviction, so he went with Werner I think. He had a good run for Coca Cola through Werner and at some point schneider started calling him and he told them to screw off, as Werner had been good to him. I THINK JB hunt wants 90 days of experience, and I've never heard much of anything about us express.
dr_lizardo:
I looked at US Express. According to their website their trucks are all autostick. I like the idea of having an easy to drive truck, but I think that overall for my career it would be best to have experience driving your basic ten speed. One of the instructors at Nettts is in the habit of pointing out that people who go to work for TransAm tend to stay there, but I'm inclined to suspect that they do so because they get spoiled driving trucks with automatic trasmissions.

From what I can tell most of the larger companies tend to be within a cent per mile of each other for beginning grads. Swift is offering 36cpm for northeast regional and 26cpm otr jumping up to 32cpm after 6 months, 2cpm ahead of US Express oops Xpress, assuming i have all the up to date accurate info.

I suspect that half of how good your company is comes down to your dispatcher anyway, and that's basically a spin on the roulette wheel. I seem to recall the Werner rep saying you could change driver managers if the one you've got isn't working well for you, but I don't know how widely such things are practiced, as opposed to just changing companies.

I don't know if ignorance is always bliss, but eventually you've just got to pick something and go.

Bush: "Iraq Study Group Agrees With Me"

I love that quote. He's like... a cute and annoying 3 year old child.

My SG "homepage" now looks like a cluttered mess. I despise it.

I'm one wrong turn away from being in the movie "Deliverance".

Dr_Lizardo has previously blogged about the (perceived) "romantic" side of trucking. That is, seeing America by taking the roads less traveled. While it is true that the trucker's view of the country largely consists of interstates, truck-stops, and industrial parks... there IS at least some degree of truth to the more interesting vision of...

Hey, I daresay I would probably not consider rural mississippi " romantic", although I would not be averse to seeing it, to have seen it. You were actually the one to come up with the word romantic after I likened setting off in a big rig to setting off in a sailing ship in the 18th or 19th centuries, to go off and see the world.

Actually there is a mystique in a lot of places. I might be curious to see Avalon, Mississippi, where Mississippi John Hurt was from. I am reminded of that song about the train called the City of New Orleans. I hope I don't ever get bored seeing new places.

I like both revolvers and self-loaders. A long barrelled revolver lends itself to exaggerated perspective photographs however.

Well, take care.

Fuck this new format. I'm getting tired of them fucking around trying to fix shit that ain't broke.
