'Minute Food'
Opening Scene:
Dead leaves blow across the top of a white four-door Toyota. It crouches under two overgrown trees in the side-yard of a dumpy house. The sun drifts up from a thick bed of white blankets the way a corpse would bob along slightly disturbed waters. The front screen door swings open, slapping against the house, weak as a piece of paper. A suitcase is tossed so it completely flies over the front steps of the house, the first few bushes and lands on the broken cement walkway that sticks out like a tongue from the old home. We hear two guys scream in enthusiasm. Two seconds later, one makes his appearance. He is skinny and tall, 64, in ripped jeans, a black t-shirt, and a beanie pulled down to his eyes. He runs over to the suitcase, picks it up, and throws it up in the air, screaming, celebrating. The screen door opens again. We here a few seconds of White Zombies Thunder Kiss 65. Another guy walks out - Jesse. He has wavy black hair and a smile that would ease anyones weariness. He is obviously the gentler of the two. He approaches the guy thats been screaming Marhollow. Jesse has a photograph in his hand. He approaches Marhollow, who has quieted for the moment and looks around the yard.
MARHOLLOW I will not miss this place. I will not fucking miss this place at all.
JESSE (Looking a bit hurt, flicks a photograph at Marhollow): Remember this? Remember when we took this?
Marhollows eyes look at Jesse for a second, then down at the picture. He takes it from Jesse. A smile conquers Marhollows face as he reminisces.
MARHOLLOW - Yeah, of course I do.
JESSE - That day at the beach, with Rachel. Well, Im sorry about the time we kissed. I just wanted to saybefore you got on that plane to Chicago. I dont want you ever hating me.
MARHOLLOW I dont hate you, Jesse.
JESSE Yeah, okay.
They both stare at the photograph. Its a picture of a beautiful girl, dark brown hair in a skimpy pink bikini, kicking at the water.
JESSE You set that tree on fire, the one where we carved our initials into, remember?
Jesse looks up at Marhollow through his glasses. He looks like he might say something else, but instead he rests his head against Marhollows shirt. Marhollow leans down and kisses the top of his head.
JESSE I wouldnt have made it through the last year at Nicolet High without you. That night on the beach I was just drunk.
Marhollow folds his hand over the back of Jesses neck and forces eye contact.
MARHOLLOW It was a night that happened and now its over. Now lets get our asses to the airport before I miss my flight.
JESSE Okay.
The door opens again. We hear Thunder Kiss 65 until it closes. No one appears from the door. The boys stare over at the porch.
MARHOLLOW My old man.
JESSE I thought he was coming to say goodbye.
MARHOLLOW (Bitterly laughing) Yeah, fucking right. Just wanted to see if Id left yet. He wants to start the party.
JESSE Lets go, man.
Jesse picks up the suitcase, swings it around.
JESSE This is light, what you taking?
MARHOLLOW Not much, clothes. I still got a lot of stuff there I didnt bring back.
In the car an air freshener lemon hangs from the mirror. On the dashboard is a notebook with the Nicolet High School emblem of a sketched knight its actually just the armor, no face. Then the letter N and the word KNIGHTS spelled out on a ribbon tied to the bottom of the armor gear. The image is boring black and white. The heavy afternoon sun beats down on it. Scattered on the floorboard are a bunch of tapes. Jesse bends a bit to start the car then he stops. He looks over at Marhollow. Marhollow keeps an intense face, his hand folded into a fist, lightly bumping his lips every so often. He glances out of the window, then over at Jesse who is staring back at Marhollow with the face of a wrecked lovers.
JESSE I know you cant wait to get out of here but you are gonna miss me, right?
MARHOLLOW Of course, man, of course. Im sorry about what those jocks did to you behind the bleachers.
The tears that suddenly float up into Jesses eyes make them look like they hold slivers of glass inside. His still fingers the keys in the ignition, staring ahead at the dirt road that will soon be a highway that will soon be an airport with a plane waiting to take his best friend away.
MARHOLLOW But we got em back though, right?
JESSE Is that why youre leaving all of the sudden, because youre afraid? Youre afraid they might come after us for it?
MARHOLLOW (Shakes his head) No, man, Im leaving cos theres nothing here for me. I feel like Im just standing in front of my own coffin just waiting to jump in. Look, man, you know you can come up there anytime you want and hang out.
JESSE Yeah, ok.
OPEN ROAD COUNTRY
A van travels down a winding road. Its grey, its windows dark. It carries with it complete silence. It creeps along, slowly, as if the driver is looking for someone or something, possibly lost.
The Toyota comes in the opposite direction, the two cars pass. Marhollow and Jesse both look slightly worried; Jesse more so than Marhollow. They dont look at each other.
MARHOLLOW Just keep driving.
JESSE But its
MARHOLLOW (Remaining calm) Keep driving.
Jesse does as hes told. He slides down in the seat a bit. The van has turned around.
JESSE Shit, Mars, shit.
MARHOLLOW Just dont panic.
JESSE You have your gun? Please fuggin tell me you have your gun.

I like the look and feel of the film but, like you say, so much was left out of the book.
I can see why they left some bits out (the acid/rat scene for instance), but I guess they just wanted to pare down the story to make it neater and easier for audiences to digest.
