Fossils, Fumes & Fun!

Going to Centralia, Pennsylvania on Sunday. What's so special about Centralia, you say?

In 1961, a fire broke out in the mines beneath Centralia (located on Rt 61). Between then and now, almost the entire community (which wasn't really a lot) has been relocated. The really cool thing about this place, is that the fire is still burning after more than 40 years. The ground should be hot, even though their was a heavy snowfall not too long ago. On top of that, the sulphur fumes have bleached the bark of the trees (which are all dead). Rt 61 which used to run straight through the town has a crack a couple feet deep and maybe a foot or two wide. There are "pipes" sticking out of the ground that seem to be vents for the gases below.

Should be fun, and I hope to take my dad's 35mm camera so that I can take plenty of photographs. I'm also going to take a pair of goggles just in case the fumes bother my eyes. But hey, everyone loves goggles, right?

So it's Friday night. Why am I sitting home, alone, on my computer? Oh well, at least I'm practically naked.
