Edmonds is going to the DL now? Reggie won't be back for "at least a couple of weeks."
But somehow the Cardinals keep winning. I've begun reading Three Nights in August by Buzz Bissenger. The Cardinals keep winning with Pujols, Eckstein, and Abraham Nunez(??) leading the way on offense. This just reinforces the book's presentation of Tony LaRussa as maniacal genius.
I think he's a great manager. I was against his last two contract extentions, because he frustrates the hell out of me at times. For instance, in game one of the World Series the Cardinals and Red Sox were playing in Fenway Park. Fenway has a relatively short distance to the wall in left, but it's the green monster, so it's a big fucking wall, right. So Tuguchi was tagged to be the starting DH. He hit 9th in the lineup. If any of you happen to be filling out a baseball lineup someday, and you are batting your Designated Hitter 9th, then you either have an insanely good offense, your team sucks really bad, or you aren't doing your job very well.
John Mabry watched game one from the bench. All the man does is hit warning track flyballs to left and straight down the first baseline(also crazy short in Fenway Park).
Also, I'm a huge proponent of Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo as a managerial candidate. Every winter for the last 4 years I have been excited to see other teams with manager vacancies choose not to interview him for a position. In
Whitey Herzog himself says that Jose Oquendo would make the best manager of all the players he ever managed.
All in all, I do have a lot of respect for Tony LaRussa, and I do think he's an excellent manager. He's now third all time on the managerial wins list. He's behind 2 guys who owned there teams, so they didn't get fired.
