Penn and Teller don't update their road essays very frequently... but when they do, they're always worth reading. Two recent entries by Teller (first, second) detail the story behind an intimate two-day concert of Bartok quartets performed by the Colorado Quartet, an affair Teller originally organized for himself and a few friends, but opened up some pricey tickets to the public to... I'm hanging in the Portland airport right now (they've added free wifi access since last year!) waiting for my flight home after another Christmas in Portland (well, Vancouver, Washington, actually, since my parents moved there a couple years ago... but it's just across the river). I think I've spent every Christmas here in the Portland area since I was born, except for two of them... Read More
I agree completely. It's the easiest thing in the world to be a critic; actually doing something about the things you criticize is the key. I'm glad you had a good holiday. I enjoyed the time with my family as well, even though my mom tries to cajole me into moving home every time I visit.
Another Friday, another weekend, an assload of great movies opening... so things are pretty good.
I leave for Portland next Thursday to visit family & friends, and while I'm there I have a job interview lined up that I think will go well. So I may be going back home permanently before long...
I haven't spent much time here lately... lotsa freelance work during election season is almost a given for someone who works in politics in a gummint town, but things have quieted down a little.
I turn 32 on Friday, but I don't have any plans. Any suggestions?

Some of the pics were easy to pick out because I already knew them well. Like an image or... Read More
Those of you who get my screen name (at least a few of you do), and those of you who know how excited I get about economics (probably none of you do), might be able to guess that this article about the monetary economics of Gilligan's Island is almost like a wet dream for me...
Yes, it's just a dumb TV show, but in this... Read More
I just got back from an amazing extended weekend visiting friends out of town... maybe someday I can write about it...
Since I'm inherently an introvert, and very reserved when I'm around people I don't know well, I think my friends kept wondering whether I was having a good time at all. But it was a blast, in every way.
A few days ago I got back from St. Louis, where I spent almost a week hanging out with my best friend Justin for the holiday while his wife & kids were in California visiting relatives and doing the Disney thing. We almost went to Six Flags four days in a row, but there was a downpour every day -- complete with tornado warnings and... Read More
OK, so people keep telling me I need to update my journal. But hey -- it's only been 32 days! So lay off, already!
I recently went to stay with my sister & her family for a week and a half. In fact, all my immediate family and much of my extended family was in town, too... and we all got to see the new... Read More
