I think it's quite peculiar that I walk to a cafe to sit with a lot of other people who are all crouched over laptops engaging in wireless communication. In one sense we are more isolated than ever before, since none of us talk to each other or even acknowledge each other's presence. yet all of us are making some effort to either communicate or learn something.
Every time I sit outside this place, a crow comes on foot up the sidewalk, swaggering a little.
Maybe it's the same crow every day. It's hard to tell. but it does the same thing, which is to approach with care, to within a few feet of where I sit, then poke along under the tables near the curb. It's a quiet street.
Today there are some bluejays, scatttered around over the rooftops.

It's supposed to rain later on.
The crow sits on top of a bent cedar across the street, inviisible almost because of the glare.
Yesterday I had my vision test at the DMV and discovered that my left eye is no longer perfect. I had to read the line of letters very carefully, and they were not clear. The right eye is still 100%, I'm glad to report. I delayed renewing my license for a while, since I don't drive these days, but you need and I.D. for so many things I finally got around to it. The new DMV has chairs and a computerized paging system so you don't have to stand forever in a line.
The crow is back, strutting around and eyeing me with what appears to be suspicion.
It's discomforting to understand that if I were lying unconscious, the first thing he'd go for is my eyes.
I'm not sure what he's finidng to eat, but there must be scraps of muffins and danish here and there.
