Apparently people would embellish stone and marble sculptures with wax and pass off the embellished statuary as a higher grade. It's possible to add fine detail to wax much easier than to stone. You can make things look better.
But it's insincere. Superficial.
It's a word that wouldnt have been invented unless there was a general need for it. Pound reported that the practice was known to continue until his day. Thus the continued necessity for the term.
And of course we see it in all the arts.
Which makes the comparittively rare appearance of sincere art that much more noteworthy.
Even a sincere statement is a kind of art.
Insincere academicians, theologists, engineers and politicians, as well as business people create false treasures which distract us from what we're supposed to be doing. Whatever that is.
