okay, so "the last samurai" is about a us army officer, tom cruise, training japanese soldiers to fight samurai. he's defeated and ends up joining up with the enemy,. the samurai, and eventually has to fight against his former army, as an excepted member of the samurai clan. hmmm. maybe it's just me, but that sounds like that american kid that became a member of the taliban and was flushed out of the tunnels in afganistan. but he got twenty years and tom cruise will probably get an academy award nomination.
also, i was thinking back to thanksgiving. at one point i was listening to npr; it might have been the day of thanksgiving or the night before. there was an interview of a leader of an indian reservation, who was mostly interviewed about his reservation's success with gambling casinos. every single high school graduate on the reservation gets a $50,000 grant. their schools are well funded and social programs have pleanty of backing. that all sounded good. it sounds a lot better than the whole "alcoholism runs amok in reservations" tale. but it struck me as odd that it was aired on thanksgiving. like such good news would make the turkey settle good in the white man's tummy. it would give the bored housewife, that had spent a whole day baking a genetically modified turkey, some rhetoric salvo to rebutt her knee-jerk activist, liberal daughter that's visiting from college. but it left me thinking things like: is it like this on all reservations? are there any negative effects of the gambling? and, how do most indians feel about white people, their gambling, and thanksgiving? but, i guess that doesn't go well on some people's stomachs...
i was talking to a girl at work the other day when in mid conversation, i took out my hankie and blew my nose. her mouth went agape as her nose crinkled and she pointed out that i looked at it before i folded it up and put it in my pocket. i shrugged it off and asked her if she ever got a snotty nose with boggies; especially when you work in a really dusty coffee roasting warehouse. and i've made a point to blow my nose in front of her every chance i get and then show it to her, before i fold it up and put it in my pocket.
i made a mix cd of xmas songs for the coffeeshop i part time at. i couldn't resist putting the coca cola jingle "i'd like to teach the world to sing...". i know, i know. it just really reminds me of xmas when i was young. some guy totally felt me, when he walked up while it was playing with tears in his eyes and was like "holy shit man, this totally reminds me of when i was a kid!" and grabbed a napkin and sat back down at his laptop. but i couldn't help feeling... i dunno, guilty that i felt such a fondness for a product jingle. i know it's just familiarity and object recognition, but it makes me think of things like "programming" and "subliminal". robot
well, i don't know about anyone else, but now that "carnivale" has ended its season, i'm looking forward to scifi channel's "battlestar galactica" coming up this weekend. especially since starbuck is a girl now!!! love
sci fi tv = good.
heart breaking tv jingle = bad
