Saw Donnie Darko for the first time this weekend. Loved it. Kind of confused about the ending though. Which one was it:

A) He goes back in time

or

B) Right before the debris crashes into his house he day dreams of all the events that took place after it happened the first time around. You know like that one short story from American Lit. that is based during the Civil War. I apologize for not remembering the name of the story, it has been like 4 years since I read it.

In the story a southerner, who is not in the Confederate Army, but is a sympathizer burns a bridge. The Union Army had actually tricked him into doing so and decide to hang him. They drop him off and the rope breaks. So the rest of the story is him running from the Union troops. At the end he starts getting a pain in his neck then it cuts to him hanging from the noose. The rope never did break, it was just his mind going in to double time and fantasizing (sp?) of getting free.

So is what happened to Donnie similar to the story that I mentioned above? Or was it more simple like going back in time?
