dude, i gotta update my journal....

okay, so i have now enrolled in gracie jiu jitsu classes. i've always been curious about jiu jitsu since the gracies dominated the first few Ultimate Fighting Championships. I love my bloodsports, but I really think UFC did a lot for martial arts as a whole. I think it actually proved which ones work outside of the martial arts tournaments and which ones didn't. so now as a result, Mixed Martial arts has become popular, and uses a lot of Jiu jitsu and Thai kickboxing (I wanna do that later on too).

i took karate when i was a kid, and a lot of japanese martial arts are very old school, traditional, and disciplinarian. Jiu Jitsu does come from Japan, but the most common style now is the Brazilian style that was mainly developed by the Gracie family. The schools I've been to are a more easy going, open atmosphere than the strict disciplinarian kind, and i think that has a lot to do with the Brazilian influence on it.

I like Jiu Jitsu because everything is based off of technique and leverage. Royce Gracie was not a very big guy. the whole style is designed so that a person big or small, can defeat an opponent of anysize. your best position to fight is on your back, with your opponent between your legs...so that would make it a much more practical style of fighting for women's self defense.

i took one of those self-defense classes in high school because i needed a PE credit, but i didn't want to run around and play basketball. it was a freakin' joke. if i showed you some of the moves they taught us, you would laugh. i think a lot of women's self-defense classes are real shitty because they don't teach real fighting techniques and they give the students a false sense of security. so if you're looking for a self-defense class....take jiu jitsu, thai kick boxing...or mixed martal arts.
*************

In Brazil, Jiu Jitsu is very popular. Every gym down there is also a Jiu Jitsu school. There's also a style that goes with it. It's these big, buff, rich kids with tight T-shirts, gold jewelry, and pit-bulls.

When I was in Sao Paulo, I was walking down Augusta, and 2 of these Jiu Jitsu guys with their pit-bulls come walking down the street. there's this stray dog that comes along from the other direction. it's a mutt about the same size as the pitbulls, but has a snout and ears like a german shepherd. the dogs start barking and snarling at each other.

i'm thinking "oh shit, those pit-bulls are gonna tear this poor dog apart." the stray jumps up with the first pit-bull, and they botth start like they're gonna bite each other's necks...but the guy pulls the pit-bull away. then the little scrapper gets into it with the second pit-bull, and the same thing happens.

if i could have, i would have adopted this dog right then and there. i thought he was gonna get mauled and he stood his ground against both those pit-bulls. the owners probably didn't want their dogs getting diseases from being bitten by a stray...but still.... the point is, even when the odds are against you, always hold your ground as best you can. you might not kick anybody's ass, but you'll definately do a lot better than most people would expect.

more brazil pics on the way...but i freakin' hate converting them to net files.
