things i have done while here in brazil:
taken jiu jitsu classes
met lots of wonderful people
got some new tattoos (pictures to come)
tasted new foods
rebuilt a bond with an old friend
tried ca.... this traditional brazilian liquor that i cannot remember how to spell
learned some portuguese
had some great sex
talked to people about the simpsons, johnny cash, ray charles, and hardcore bands
but most importantly... i have learned a lot. and i will write about these things and post some pictures in the next few weeks.
....and any american who travels abroad and says that they are canadian can lick my hairy balls.
the 3 biggest countries in the new world are canada, brazil, and the USA. people always say that canada is almost exactly like the US, but when you think about it, Brazil has a lot more in common when it comes to history and race. Canada and the United States both used to be English colonies. But Canada wasn't an independant nation until after WW2. Brazil, declared independance from Portugal in 1822, less than 50 years after 1776. Canada is 90% White. Canada never had slavery and therefore has never had as many problems with racial tension as the USA or Brazil. The US and Brazil both had a large influx of immigrants from all over the world, and are way more diverse than canada. most of canada is uninhabitable....therefore it has a much smaller population than the us and brazil.
yea.... US and Canada are both first world, English speaking Anglo cultures that share a border....but it's kind of interesting when you think about the similarities the US has with Brazil.

In Brazil, there's much more physical contact among people. It kind of wierded me out at first. I'm from the emotionally coldest part of the United States and touching someone is usually reserved for extreme emotions...when you're having a lot of fun and you give high fives... when you're proud of someone, you give them a pat on the back....when you want to fight with someone...when you want to flirt with someone...when you want to show someone you care.... here, it's a pat on the shoulder at any time...you kiss a girl on the cheek when you say hello or goodbye...you can hang out with your arm on your friend's shoulder... it's kind of nice.
i also noticed that people will make out anywhere like they don't give a shit. at the park, in the restaurant, on the subway....
When I was 13 or 14, I would make out with my girlfriend in public because we weren't around our parents. But when adults make out in public, people say, "GET A ROOM!"
i was talking with my friend Guy, and i asked about this, he said it was kind of a Latin thing and it's nice because the love is in the air and people want to show other people that they love someone. We were in a park, and we walked by another kissing couple and I told Guy there's so much love in the air that I was choking.

i had no idea brazil has such a cool vibe. sounds like somewhere id definately want to check out.
I hardly ever travel - mainly because I can't afford it but I'm also very scared of flying.
