i think that if i wrote a novel at this point, it would center largely around how fucked up your relationships are if your only communication is online. before anyone takes this personally, what i mean is that unless you and the other person are both extremely eloquent, never use sarcasm, and are in perpetually good moods, it's so difficult to maintain a relationship -- romantic OR friendship -- solely online. words without facial expressions or tone of voice, particularly when conveying emotion, don't do the trick. too much of a chance of misunderstanding, misinterpreting.

but don't emoticons pick up the contextual slack?!?

i don't have the moxie for novel writing. the internet has ruined me. if i have to scroll, i'm clicking out.
