That is absolutely the way of it. Being unavailable - that impenetrable barrier - allows them to throw as hard as they like, because they know nothing will happen. It's like pressing your face against the glass of an aquarium holding a poisonous snake that you wouldn't get within ten feet of in the wild.

At least that's how it works with me. Seems the only girls I'm comfortable flirting with are the taken ones. Or gay. Or absolutely not into me. Knowing nothing will happen is very freeing and relaxing. Actually connecting gets so complicated, why risk it?
