I called the Red Cross today to offer my help iin the disaster relief. It took about 30 mins to get thru, so i could leave a message. Then a lady called me back and we dicusssed availabel positions. I hoped that I would be boxing items or assisting in preparations for shipping, but instead I am assisting on phones. I will be giving information to those in need of direction or help. Maybe some light data entry. I wish I could do it he whole weekend, but I can only spare Sun due to work. I'll probably sign up for another future date, but I wish I could do more now.
When I watch the news footage, I feel like intangible memories are being washed away. Places and landmarks that solidify the bond to my old home are gone. Northshore Hosiptal (voluteered in the radiology dept. as a kid) Jr High, H.S., Rue Holiday Rd,, Gauze Blvd., Canal St., Garden Dist, Metairie, and Covington (my first love's town)- all memories, just mental pictures with no present, visible structure. I hear that the rebuilding process will be suspect - not worth restoring to the unique, picturesgue N.O. I grew to love - therefore I fear what is in store for the metro area.
