When you sit and bitch about someone's behavior, but not only do you do nothing to encourage change you actually inadvertently encourage it.
"oh wah, the man in my life hasn't worked in 2 years so I work two jobs to support him and our kids."
"where's he applied?"
"well he refuses to apply anywhere below him."
"oh you mean the stupid ball busting no benefits jobs you work so he can do nothing while you support a house hold and his smoking an drinking habits. Last time I checked no ones above ANY amount of a paycheck"
You my friend are an enabler.
Grow a pair and stop being everyone's door mat. Especially your significant others.

I've helped some of my closes friends thru situations like yours or they are in physically abusive relationships and it is very hard to get out of them.
