After a stern nudging to pad out my page I decided to look for something to put here.
Friday night, I get a phone call.
Friend: Doing anything tomorrow?
Self: Like what?
Friend: RenFest!
Self: What time?
Friend: Morning around 10-11. I'll Drive and you can sleep in the back seat on the way up.
Self: The one in Tuxedo?
Friend: Yeah.
Self: Ok, give me a wake up call.
Ok, so thats not RenFest but RenFaire, but people say Xerox not photocopy. Saturday morning I head over to his place, listening to the radio and they play a song that happens to "Jesus Christ" in the lyrics. I think its a Pearl Jam song. Guess what they censor? Yeah, thats right. Oh, and to make the irony of it all any better, the station , WSOU, is owned by a Catholic University!
I find it annoying when curses are censored out of music, but I didn't know that JC was a curse. I make it over to my friend's house and to see if he had any opinions on the event and he too was dumb founded. I then only did what would be the next logical course. I called up the radio station. After a short order I had someone explain that the reason for censorship was a 'just in case we offend someone' tactic so that they don't get upset by the blasfemouse act of saying the lords name in vain.
I tried pointing out that the lyrics in question asked for redemption. Surely that has to be a very Christen act? No dice. So I asked if I can get Slayer played. (Current policy as of 2 years ago is no more Slayer.) I assured him that they won't mention this questionable person and there is no reason to censor any of their music. The DJ laughs and states that he wishes he could but the school morality board wont let that happen either.
May I mind you that at this point my friend has realized what I have done and is laughing histaricaly in the background. I think the DJ can actualy hear him. So I start talking again to drown out my background noise. I think I may have gone too far with the next suggestion.
Self: You know, I think on your Sunday (Mt. Zion) program that may have said the Lords name. Your censor board may wish to edit them so as not to offend anyone.
He no longer seamed amuzed by our conversation and suddenly offended. He politely said that he would forward my request and hung up. I don't know if he got my point. I don't think anyone else will speak of it. My last move failed. Tis a shame that the hysterical laughter of my friend threw me off...
