hmmm, in most cases oldhead just means an older person. like "youngbuck" is a younger person why?

sometimes its a term of respect. One time I was in the car with my dad and some young guy with a cigarette walked up and said: Yo, oldhead, can i get a light". At first i thought he was dissing him, but my dad explained that its also a term of respect. Like you've lived long enough to be an oldhead.
