I have never written a blog and I don't expect to make many more entries, but I have come across something that in my opinion is worth writing about. I recently heard about Open Office on an iTunes podcast that I get and I decided to try it out and it's great. For those who are used to using Micorsoft Office it works just the same with some minor differences in appearence and shortcut key combinations, but the major difference is that it is FREE. All they ask is that you spread the word about it or make a donation or just contribute to the developement as other open source products like to do. Another good aspect of it is that is has almost all the capabilities of the full Microsoft Office Suite, but at $300-$400 less the cost.

If you want to try it out go to www.openoffice.org and download it and compare it to Microsoft Office if that's what your using.

I just recently bought a new laptop and didn't want to spend the extra money getting the full blown Microsoft Office Suite since I don't need it much at home and the Microsoft Works was included and would get me by for my needs. I tried this and it was barely enough for what I needed and it didn't offer very many of the options that I've gotten used to using Microsoft Office at work. Open Office though does have everything that I need and more, including a nifty little program that maps out mathmatical formulas.

I just thought I'd write this incase anyone actually read this and I could suggest something other than a Microsoft product that costs way too much. If anyone reads this and tries Open Office let me know how it went.

Oh the podcast that I heard this about was WebbAlert, it's a good podcast to get the headlines of new things related to tech. Check it out as well.
