This morning, I came across an article written a few years ago where a magazine was interviewing our fearless leader @missy regarding the continued relevance of SuicideGirls in the modern age.
There's no denying that SuicideGirls no longer stands in contrast to mainstream beauty ideals. This site was conceptualized during a time when having tattoos and piercings was frowned upon, and posing nude was akin to committing social suicide. Thanks to the global shift in mindsets and the popularization of sites like OnlyFans, this is no longer the case.
We live in a world where almost everyone you see has some sort of body modification, where coloured hair is trending, and where tattoos are just seen as another accessory. The fight for "alternative" forms of beauty to be seen in the same light as other, more conventional forms of beauty is no longer one that feels like an uphill battle.
Alternative is the new normal. And it's no longer as difficult for a woman who looks like me to be regarded with the same level of attractiveness as it would have been many years ago. So, where does that leave us?
Well, we've won, obviously! Isn't that what this site was all about? We wanted to be seen, to be appreciated, to be celebrated, and we got exactly what we asked for!
Contrary to what it may seem, the widespread acceptance of this particular brand of beauty doesn't make SuicideGirls irrelevant. In fact, it makes us more relevant than ever! Because you can never beat the original.
SuicideGirls has pioneered what people now see as edgy beauty packaged in a classic pinup aesthetic. And, while others may feel inspired to emulate it, it can never truly be rebranded. Why else has the term "SuicideGirl" automatically come up anytime a beautiful woman with tattoos and piercings is featured anywhere in mainstream media? It's because we've become the standard.
And, yes, you can find models who look like us across various platforms now, and that's amazing, but I think the difference here will always be the community. SuicideGirls bridges the gap between a pinup and a person, and you get to fall in love with each girl, not just because she's so beautifully decorated, but with who she is as a person. Here, we get to interact with each other as equals. I mean, have you ever tried that on other social media sites? Good luck getting a response that doesn't involve using your credit card.
I cannot fathom a world where SuicideGirls becomes irrelevant. It's a cultural movement that inspired a shift in global consciousness that was so ahead of its time. And now that the world has finally caught up?
Well, now we just get to ride the wave whilst enjoying a nice tall glass of "I told you so!"
