For your ease and safety I've divided this rant up into sections.

[Computer Geeky Rant starts:]

Well, I finally blew up a computer. Quite a bit of that going around.

I have a friend who actually does IT at the university and has been dealing in hardware for years, and he recently set me up with a bare-bones box roughly 3x as powerful as my current tiny god for $300. All I had to do was transfer all the useful bit over to it, like the video card, extra ram, and my hard drives full of personal files and mad piratics.

Had the whole thing just about set up how I like, but I still wanted to see if this new ram worked out, so I jammed it in between the snake-nest of cables, locked it down and turned on the machine.

It screamed at me, so I turned it off, which is when I noticed the smell. I took out the ram stick and it was hot. When I tried turning it on again, I could hear everything spinning up but no sound or vision toured. So if I'm lucky, I've only fried a few sticks of ram I can easily replace. At worst, I may have blown up $300 and all my data.

The best part is I can't really nail it down til my buddy's available on Tuesday and this happened Friday night. On the increasingly geeky side, my EVE online game has been waiting to update my skills for almost 24 hours and I keep getting reallyclose to finding a way to getting online and it not working - roommate's computer has admin system he's barely aware of, danny_g's lappy went into internet darkzone less than an hour ago. It's like the exact opposite of defusing a bomb in a movie: all this effort to reach a deadline, then it doesn't resolve, and the problem is still there.

[:Computer Geeky Rant end]

[Theatre Stuff begins:]

Shakespeare audition was fun but . . . I want to say fruitless, but they said they might want me to come out and choreograph something in the future, so that sounds good, but I'm not sure if that was sincerity or advanced diplomacy. In short, no touring Much Ado through interior BC this summer fo' me.

On the plus side I got into another show in my favorite way: a friend of a friend recommends me because they didn't get enough men auditioning and can I fit it into my schedule? So now I get to do Salome! Rehearsals start this week and show's up in April. Haven't met the cast yet but I'm pretty sure I've heard of one of them who's a woman who does fight choreography. This intrigues me on a few levels, and I'll probably stick to the professional ones.

I should still work on my audition skillz though, for when I see a show I want and have to do it the old-fashioned way. ("Hmm, I see you put 'skin-flute' under special skills - let's discuss it in my office. Mind the toilet, it leaks.) Where was I? Oh yeah, auditioning. I'm lining up 2 this week even though I have a show I'm already doing, working on the theory that if I don't really need it, I'll relax and show myself at my best, remember how that feels and do it again in future. It's a theory.

[Theatre Stuff segues into Dance Stuff almost seamlessly:]

Caught Alberta Dance Explosions this week and will probably do so the next two weekends. I know a two-thirds majority of the dancers and choreographers, it seems, but under new management I seem to have lost all my 'dance cred' and don't get free invites anymore. At least, not from the establishment. My friend Angela dragged me down there this week and then mentioned she was prepared to pay for my ticket. She tells me this at intermission, though, and uses it as an excuse to ply me with wine. During the show, we're sitting back row snuggled together, with the occasional poke war or elbow skirmish breaking out between pieces.

[Further segue into The Women in JD's life:]

Now to many of you, this may sound like something really cool, and it is up to a point. I've known Angela for about 2 years now, meeting her in a contact improvisation class at UofC and hitting it off almost immediately. She's a fine art major specializing in sculpture and a dance minor, and about as hot as you might imagine her to be. She also has one of those 3-way bulb boyfriends (dim, Brighter, BRIGHTEST! off. dim, Brighter, BRIGHTEST! off.) who doesn't seem to share her arts interests and routinely pisses her off, which is what men are supposed to do, apparently, because now she's pushing for them to get engaged.

So, bad for me? Yeah, in the same way too much wine would be bad for me, I figure. But when we go out, everybody thinks she's with me, and that ain't too bad. It's practice-dating, like the practice-auditions I'll be doing. I'll look good because I'm relaxed, and I'll seem unattainable because I appear taken, which strangely makes me linger in the mind.

I don't make these rules, I just try to play.

So there it was: geek to chic to creep to cool to spastic. That'll be a good overview of me for a few weeks.

Keep those cards and letters coming.

That is awesome to hear about the theature stuff. It sounds like you really are enjoying yourself. Keep up the great work.

Sucky about the computer. I have never blown one up yet, but I still have 50 or 60 years. biggrin

Hang on to your internal organs, here I go....

Weeeeeeee!

Ah, sucks about your computer. Mine is just a glorified tool to check my email and SG. I know squat of importance about computers!

I'll bet you didn't know that I choreographed bands stage shows and did something for the Hard Music Awards where I actually did all the choreography and performed the dance too, did ya?

Spooky.

They shouldn't let me outside alone.
