Spent most of today reading Warren Ellis' Crooked Little Vein. I mostly picked it up because of the amazing quote by Joss Whedon on the back: "I think this book ate my soul. Warren Ellis has mapped out the psychosexual underbelly of America with a foreigner's clarity and a lunatic's glee. Funny, inventive, and blithely appalling, this book is Dante on paint fumes." I also have become an avid reader of his Sunday Hangover column. So I picked it up with a vague knowledge of what to expect. It was pretty much what I thought it would be, content wise, though i misjudged the politics and noir elements which domiated much of the tale. Anyway, it was a wonderful novel. It was difficult to get through at times, since the story spent most of its time meandering within transgressive sexuality. But it did an amazing job of negating the phrase I just used. As any true Canadian, I hate the United States with an unrivaled passion. But the novel was all about extrapolation, so I can extend the themes to life here as well as anywhere.
