The world always seems to change in the blink of an eye. And, with billions of people blinking it would mean the world is in a constant state of change. Would it not? But, what if when you closed your eyes you open them in another?
Yesterday I went to an interesting city by the ocean. The city's architecture was Arabic with aspects Roman mixed in. And while the city was on the ocean I didn't get the impression that it benefited from any ocean travel or fishing, as it was lacking a port for any vessel to dock, but there was a lighthouse at the far end of the delta. The water seemed more like a natural barrier than anything while the opposing side of the city was protected by a descent sized wall. I say protected but looking back I get the feeling more so to keep what lies behind the wall in than things out.
The city itself was very lively. The market was always busy, even all the way through the wee hours of the night. The streets were lit by oil lamps, maybe gas all I know is there was an open flame, but not so brightly that it overshadowed the lights coming from all the houses. It was a sight to see, in the light of the blue moon all the lights looked much like stars each hiding the sound of laughter and talk about the events of the day, always so clear but just out of earshot.
But, to the reason I found myself wondering this unique city by the ocean. I've mentioned that I felt like the walls were meant to keep something in, but it was more than that. The city had the distinct feeling that it was stagnant. As I walked the streets, I got the feeling I was looked on as an enigma, like I could have sold tickets. It was kinda unsettling, but so was knowing that something else was amiss in this city. Something lived in the shadows of this city, whether benign or malicious I couldnt tell. But, I opened my eyes before I could find out what it was and sad to say I am kinda glad.
