The Dalai Lama said:
"I understand the meaning of 'open' as just like an open door; it can open very easily, without difficulty. 'Free' is also the same. As a result of being free and open, the more you receive new ideas, it makes you want to give out more energy. That way, each helps the other. It is very useful, very necessary, especially these days."

And I say:
I too understand, open. But I don't understand open as like a door. If things were this simple, them we could rejoice and just love each other without fear. Instead, the Dalai Lama's ideas, at least from my perspective, provide a guide for how we might see 'open' (if this is what we seek). This way, if you think about others, think about them in terms of the things that make them beautiful - even if their beauty is hard to see, for within each person their surely is beauty. In other reading, I've encountered the idea that my own foe is within me, and that once conquered, will never rise again. If this were true, then I know my enemy is formidable and will take quite a beating. I have many battles to fight. I hope I eventually win this battle.

On the concept of 'free', I wish to thank the members who reach out to others, for your reach is valued beyond words. I receive great energy from those around here, and realize now, that if I want more, then I must give more. I will try to give more. But understand that within me, there exist my own enemies which when mixed with my words of love and respect can sometimes confuse and mislead you. They can appear mean and unfriendly. If this is the case, just remember that regardless, you deserve love and I wish to help you, regardless of the tone of my message. I just want to share a part of me and if if I comment, it is because something good about you caught my attention.

what an inspiring post! so well said...

hmm,,,,this is something i think about all the time and it continues to leave me frustrated. basically all i have come to figure is that individually we can all do our part and come together in groups in order to make things even a tiny bit better (or sometimes a lot better)... look at organizations like amnesty international or greenpeace.... there are people out there trying and we must support them if we believe in what they do. but that too is hard. does this mean i should support every single environmental group? every free speech group? i don't have endless free time unfortunately.

what it comes down to is being yourself. we all need to act the way we really want to act regardless of public opinion. call me a faggot for supporting gay rights, call me a treehugger for being an environmentalist and a vegetarian. i care not about the public. it is the general public who creates these problems, why should we feel affected by them? we need to look to ourselves and individually make a difference. it may sound like i just blame people and haven't a heart. hopefully you know that isn't true.

love for all,
alex
