One of my heroes passed away this morning, the great Alex Toth.
For those of you who are not fans of cartooning or comix, Toth brought a European sensibility and grace into the medium while forming a bridge between the greats of the newspaper age (Hal Foster, Milt Caniff, Will Eisner) and the new-look era of Carmine Infantino, Neal Adams and Jim Steranko. He was also considered a gentleman's gentleman, always willing to aid or assist newcomers into the medium as well as one hell of an artist.
With Toth's passing, and era has ended: gone are the greats such as Wally Wood, Curt Swan, Dick Sprang et al. who helped refine the rough art of American comics into the vital form it remains today. Fact is, comic books are one of just two wholly native American art forms (the other being jazz) and Toth was one of its greatest practicioners.
