So what does it take to be a punk, alternative, goth, rebel, freak, or whatever label we choose to call ourselves. Many people try to say "I'm not labeling myself with any label," and that's great, but we all are something. I was a bit of a jock in my early life, but I liked art a lot and did a lot of drawing and sculpture, but I got lazy and stopped being creative for a long time. I have some tattoos which like so many million others have so that doesn't make me unique. I dress more like a grundge person, baggy dirty jeans or pants, a tee shirt or a favorite hoodie sweatshirt and of course Chuck Taylors. I definitely don't put too much into dressing to impress. What I'm getting at here (A.D.D.) is, I go down to my favorite coffee shop and there's a very cute girl that works down there, pierced nose, tatts, very beautiful. I have a big crush on this girl. She plays the cello and sings on open mic nights, and she is extremely talented. I know that when I get my coffee and try to make small talk with her that she's just being nice and doing her job by nodding her head and that she really has no interest in talking to me. I think it's because I don't look like I belong in her group, even though I love the group that she belongs to. I love the tattooed pierced freaky chics, but because I don't choose to ,I guess, put much effort into showing the rest of the world that I'm a certain way, all this lovely girl that I have a crush on sees is some bum that comes and gets coffee every morning. She doesn't see a photographer, a guy who spends a lot of time with his handicapped brothers and sisters, or a comedian. Henry Rollins (of Black Flag) said very well that punk rock is in your heart. You could wear a suit and a bow tie to work every day and still be the biggest punk rocker there is. So many of us agree with the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover," but most of us still do. We see a person in a police uniform and think "fucking pig," or we see the business executive with his suit on and think "yuppie." It's very hard not to look past a persons appearance and not form a two second conclusion about who that person is. Me, I'm a people watcher, and more than that, I'm a people wonderer. I wonder who a person is. This coffee shop cutie I like, I sit and observe. I listen to her laugh, I watch as she smiles. It would be great if she'd do the same towards me. All these thought are just the crazy rambling of a guy with A.D.D. who probably over thinks things. Yeah, that's probably right.
