I am very glad to be home now, because I wasn't sure I'd make it here, after the drive I just had.

So I decided to go get some takeout for dinner. I see a storm is moving in, but I think that I can make it, because the place I'm going is barely two miles away. I beat the storm there, but when I leave, it's getting much darker, and starting to rain a little. I decide that I can still make it. Bad idea.

Soon after I started out, the storm hit full force. Visibilty was soon down to nearly zero. And I was on one of the busiest roads in this city (Nicholasville Road, if you know this town). Traffic was fairly heavy, but everyone was going slow, so that was no problem.

Then things got steadily worse. As the rain intensified, I decided to put my windshield wipers on fast to try to keep up. This worked...for a second. Then I suppose that the blade caught on something and was torn off, because I watched it be flung off the side of my car. And, oh, by the way, that was the driver's side wiper blade too.

So I pressed on as best I could, trying to tilt my head to look out the passenger's side of the windshield, when I hit a major intersection I must go through to get to my house. At this intersection, the 6 lane road I was one intersects a 4 lane road, and there are left turn lanes in all directions. And the traffic light was out; apparently, lightning had knocked it out. So no one knew when to go. You're supposed to treat an intesection with a traffic light that's out as a 4-way stop; trouble was, there were about 12 people in all the various lanes who wanted to go. So when I figured it was my turn, I gingerly drove through the intersection, still almost completely unable to see.

I had to figure out my position on the road by looking at the white stripe on the right side to make sure I wasn't going off the road. I noticed I was in the wrong lane; I was now in the right lane, but I need to be in the left lane to make the left turn onto my street. I decided that it would not be smart to attempt to change lanes in those conditions, so I made a right turn into a park where I waited out the storm. When things lightened, I made it on home.

So there's my adventure for the day. It was pretty scary while it lasted.

I'd have to advise not driving in a heavy rain with no driver-wiper. Best to wait at least for a rain slow-down... I guess you already know that...
