What stupidity lurks in the minds of teenagers?
Lots of it, whatever kind it is.
My cousin (foster child to my aunt and uncle) decided that life was too perfect and so stole away with his girlfriend for a weekend of alcohol, drugs and no sex (according to him). He didn't call. He didn't write. So we spent a good part of the weekend worrying, searching, and putting up "missing child" posters. He's 17. Didn't get a lot of help from the police. Didn't get any help from his best friend who was in on it as of Sunday night (according to my cousin). So my aunt and uncle were able to peel enough information from the school (without affecting the privacy statutes in place to protect fucking lying little stupid bitch teenagers) to figure out where he was staying. Talked to the mother or grandmother of the girl whose house he had shacked up in (real winner there my aunt said the person was barely able to have a conversation), and figured out about where he might be.
So I drove my aunt there this evening. There he was standing on the side of the street talking to some guy. I drove right up to them (hopped a curb-SUV's serve a purpose!) and my cousin just stared at me. I crooked my finger at him and he walked around the vehicle to get into the vehicle on my aunt's side.
As we drove home my aunt called the various agencies and people that she was forced to by law and common decency. The police. The state-appointed lawyer. The biological mother. Etc.
He asked questions that stupefied me.
"You called the police?"
'Yes, well since we didn't know if you were alive and stupid or kidnapped and dead we thought it best to notify the authorities"
"You cancelled my bank account?"
'Yes well since we weren't sure if you were being held hostage for money or just stupid we thought it best to limit your resources'
"You called Jason?"
'This might be a good time for you to shut up and think about how much you'd be giving up by being taken from our house because we've been so easy on you and loved you so much'
He didn't say anything after that until his counselor came by. They talked for a while and then came upstairs. It was rough, a few tears were shed. More by me and my cousin than by my aunt and uncle but I'm sure my aunt waited until the counselor wasn't around to breakdown. She'd had a son that ran away a few times so she was able to keep her cool for a bit, but I'm sure after I left and after my cousin was in bed, that she let the floodgates open.
She's only human.
