I just got a letter from "past me" today. I started writing letters to myself on FutureMe.org about a million years ago, it feels like. Every few years, I get a letter from myself. Here are some excerpts from 3 years ago.
The end of the letter:
I'll again be sending this to you 3 years down the road... Very close to the all-fateful 2012. Nostra-damned-us, didn't he? I'm scared about the world. I don't like the bad predictions about 2012 being this ominous year... I have decided that it will simply be the dawning of a new age. Maybe the tempestuous future of the earth will not be the end, but merely a shakeup. The world has had so many disasters in the last few years, that I don't even think that all the trouble can be rolled into one year... it seems more that the hell has been drawn across an era, and perhaps it will adjust our equilibrium and right the course onto which we have sadly stumbled.
I do want frantically for a better world. The economy is crumbling, and the world is falling into a deep recession (thanks, Bushie)... Depression looms in shades of overbearing blue and desperate red on the horizon, and yet governments keep stalling, keep tripping over their bureaucracy and party-politics, and they accomplish little... My nerves itch as even temporary solutions dissolve and the sides of the hole get slick with the sweat of an anxious people. If the hole is too deep and the sides are too steep and the walls are too wet, then we can never leave... Not until everyone has ceased to sweat, and the inside of the earth swells to catapult us out of our abyss.
Here is hoping that the world is a better place... That life is on the upswing.... That your love is strong... That you have continued to travel and adventure and explore and trek across this globe... That you are defiant in the face of a bleak future and you construct some kind of personal success... That your cat stays beautiful and black and healthy... That you find the money to visit your brother once he starts working in Botswana or Zambia after his guiding course he will eventually start... That you never have a red reaction or yellow reaction or any reaction to tattoo ink and that you are covered with more beautiful relics by the time we next meet... That your stomach pain goes away... That you learn to drive better in the snow... That next year you sell your beloved fixed gear bike for something with speeds and thick wheel so to use in winter and up Mont-Royal... That your nut allergies magically dissolve... That you get approved for an Australian work & holiday visa.... That you take a beautiful 2 week vacation in Grenada or some other equally intriguing and not-so-commercial island... that Nicaragua finds itself on someone's list of places to go so you go together... That the fighting stops and your friends come home safely... That your family stays intact and that love conquers all...
As mom wrote to me this morning,
At least we still have wine.
Time to top that. Writing to a future me-- in hopes that the earth doesn't melt down and I'll still be around to read it!
