A SG friend asked me about my disabilities coz she was interested. Here's a modified vearsion of the letter I wrote to her . I decided to blog this so all my SG friends know a bit about me. You might be interested, it might just make you go hmmmm, or m'eh.
I have epilepsy; I don't know if it's classed as a disability but it's a condition I suffer. I got when I received a knock to the head. I don't have g rand mal seizures, but if I don't take medication I have blackouts and jerks in my arms and if I am walking I will fall over. The blackout can feel a slight tremor of the facial muscles to an internal
Punch in the brain.
Also I have a hearing impairment 60% hearing in my left ear and 10% hearing in my right. It's frustrating but I'm cool with it. It runs in my family. Society accepts that some people are deaf and most (not all) are willing to understand that they need to accommodate the way they communicate, also hearing aid technology is so advanced and I get free hearing aids because I'm a pensioner. Good thing to caoz 1 hearing aid costs around $2000
And yes there's even number 3
I was born with a condition called mitochondrial-epileptic-red-ragged-fibres. (Don't worry I'm about to explain it) In the cortex of my brain that organizes my co-ordination and motor control. It also makes me appear drunk/stoned. Imagine this, you drink 5 coffees in 10 mins and then put a piece of cotton through a sewing needle. That's how I feel every day of my life (don't try this as it's probably not healthy)
So I have problems with all fine motor tasks like cooking, handwriting, hand tools, typing you get the idea HERE'S A PICTURE OF MY HANDWRITING (see below)
At school I was the victim of a lot of name calling and bullying at 14 I was contemplating suicide. Then I found metal I made friends, stopped hating myself so much. Because of this condition
Having this condition affects the speed that I do things, so the employment field in my has been a bitch, that's why I started my own business
If you asked me if I view myself as a disabled person. well, like it or not I have to face the fact there are some things I can't do. I'll never be able to do a tattooing apprenticeship. But I've been an avid rock-climber, bodybuilder and now a martial artist.
So I don't view myself as very disabled but other people do. And I'll never the best at whatever it is I do.
