At least once each night, when it is later than I should be awake, I hear insistent paws beating on my sliding glass door, demanding entry from the rear porch. I get up every time, hesitantly, searching for a pair of pale, glowing eyes, which are invariably there in the darkness. No porch light is on, for there are too many bugs out here in the north country. On faith alone, I open the door, and a patch of darkest midnight, at least as dark as the night beyond the door, slips into my house by my feet. SO FAR it has always been my cat. But I can't help but wondering if, one of these nights, it won't be something very observant, a pretender, waiting for an invitation...
