So, my city is on fire. Literally. A giant hillside (3000+ acres) very, very, very close to the city proper is on fire. You can see the flames dancing around and the smoke rising up from almost anywhere in Reno. The more luxurious, hillside homes that people built up among the (very flammable, turns out) sagebrush are in immediate danger. Evacuations have occurred, but thankfully they were more a precaution than a lifesaving measure, as no structures have been damaged. That may be partly due to fire engines parked and standing sentinel near the houses, beating back flames with fire hoses (I'm not joking). It's windy as hell in Reno and the fire is situated on weird shaped hillsides, which make it hard to fight. Not to mention that said hillsides are covered in sagebrush, tumbleweeds, and other such desert foliage, all of which is extremely fucking flammable. Last I heard it was 5% contained. Containment is a nice term for "we're pretty sure it's not going to get any bigger, but kiss anything inside this circle we just drew around it goodbye." It's a little misleading when you hear that a fire is 100% contained on the news: that sounds like the fire is out, when in reality, it's just not getting any worse. Good, for sure, but still. I'm downhill from the fire, and downwind most of the time, and throughout the past two days the conditions have gone from "I can't believe the city is on fire, it's so nice and clear out" to "When the fuck did I move to the middle of urban China, and where is the road in front of me?" Anyway, here's hoping that nobody gets killed and I don't have to run out of my house naked with my iMac and Warhammer figures in tow.
