Ok, so X-Men wasn't bad. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was awesome, but it was ok. I won't give anything away, but I will say this: the film feels truncated, like there was a whole lot more there that was edited or chopped away. I can't explain it other than there just seemed to be a lot missing - specifically Wolverine's origins which are not even touched on at all (Internet movie-geek rumors about this are that a film devoted only to Wolverine is in the works). The action is good and exciting (which is really all I need from a dopey comic book movie anyway), the characters seem lifeless and without any background or development. But whatever, it was fine, much better than I had anticipated.
PS - stay for the entire film, there is a last scene after the credits that is kind of crucial.
Last night I walked up to a new shop that opened on the corner by my home. They specialize in cupcakes and coffee and being a fan of both sugar and caffeine, I found it hard to resist. I bought a cupcake and coffee, guzzled them down, bought a newspaper and walked home. I took a shortcut home and passed the VFW hall where a show was going on. The kids outside were obviously involved in the hardcore scene and the bands loading in were from California. 10 years ago I would have had everything in common with this crowd, though maybe 5 years senior on the group. But that night as I walked past I couldn't help but feel the distance between "them" and "me". I must have seemed like such an adult geek carrying my newspaper as I walked past giving them all the eye (I was mainly interested in what amps the band played, but I'm sure that I appeared to be eyeballing the kids with disapproval). If I'm not old yet, I'm certainly getting there. It feels like yesterday that I was 20.
Kids, take heed - when your parents tell you that time starts to accelerate as you get older, they are not lying. And when you find yourself writing stuff like that or saying it out loud - fuck man, it's surreal.
