Did some volunteer work today, nothing big or fancy. Out here in Seattle we have a vegetarian / vegan food convention every year called Vegfest which is awesome. And this year I volunteered as a food demonstrator making vegan pizza for people. It was fun, only took up 4 hours of my life and made me feel nice inside. Having been vegetarian for well over 17 years now, it felt good to "give back" a little something, even if all I did was warm up pizzas in a toaster oven. Plus, I got a lot of free shit and that's always a plus.
I expected to see more punk rocker types, but the place was mostly one of two groups - older people (meaning older than my decrepit ass) and young collegy type kids who I expect to "drop" the "phase" in a year or so. It occured to me that veganism or animal rights just isn't as punk as it used to be.
But then, punk isn't as punk as it used to be. I mean really, what the fuck is Hot Topic? There is nothing "alternative" about it. It's so easy to get mom to drive you down to the mall, let her go off to shop for whatever it is that suburban white women shop for while their "rebellious" little offspring checks out the Fallout Boy posters, Good Charlotte calanders and Travis Barker T-shirts and belt buckles. Must every fucking thing within the "punk" scene be mass produced, marketed and sold at inflated prices? And where do these bands get off calling themselves anything other than "products" or "whores" for their major labels?
Hmmm. This blog has taken a turn for the worse. Oh Pig Champion, why did you abandon us? Where are you GG? Come back Mr. Strummer!
I wonder, at what point, I became the old man who says things like "back when I was a kid..."? I think I was born that way. Headscratcher.
