Revelation: I could change my major, and be happy. OR continue to struggle and stress myself out.

I've always pushed the idea of changing majors aside, thinking that I would disappoint people. Everyone thought that it was the greatest thing to go to school for forensic science, and at one time, so did I. Actually, it is something that I've been interested in for a very long time, way before any of those CSI shows came around. I still think that it is fascinating. But, is it right for me? I can't seem to find any interest or success in chemistry which is a strong basis for forensics.

I talked to my friend Joe about all this and he asked me what my dream job was. He said if money was no object, what would you choose? It's a simple concept really, but I can't answer it.

If I do change my major it would be to english. I know everyone always asks "What are you going to do with an english major?" You know, I could do a hell of a lot with an English major. I love writing, and it is the one thing that I've always been able to do well. The thing is, I'm not quite sure what I want to do. Friends have always asked me to edit papers for them, and I enjoy that. I also like teaching people. Teacher, editor... two options right there.

Now all I have to do is tell my parents. surreal

I think you should change you major. You dont seem happy with your current line of study and you should get a job doing something that you can at lease some what enjoy. I hope your parent understand your desire to change majors, good luck.

You can do a tremendous amount with an english degree! Knowing how to communicate effectively in writing is a highly valuable skill. One of my friends graduated from the english program here, and is now making a pretty good amount of money working near D.C. in the public relations department of a publishing company. Also, many people get english degrees in preparation for law school. The analytic, writing, and critical thinking skills that english majors develop are perfectly suited for studying law. Those same skills are also valuable for studying business-management. The MBA program at WVU is designed for people with non-business undergraduate degrees. I've been told that knowing how to write a well though-out and properly edited paper is a must-have skill to do well in it.

I've been thinking about getting an english minor. I took 262 (Brit Lit 2) with Dr. Stewart this semester. If you do switch to english, you'll have to take this class, as it's a required course; see if you can get it with him. He's become one of my favorite professors! His lectures are insightful, and a lot of fun to listen to. The class requirements -while involving a lot of reading and writing (of course)- are not unreasonable. He's not teaching it next semester, but he probably will again in the Fall. Stay away from Dr. Ward though. I tried taking the same course with him a few semesters ago. I dropped it, as he is the most unbelievably boring lecturer I have ever met. Next semester I'm taking 258 (Popular American Culture). I was told that one of novels I'll be required to read is Fight Club. Very cool! smile
