The Jetsons

So I got the first season disc one from Netflix, and what the hell happened to us? By us I mean the USA, I mean the western world, we used to dream of the stars and the future, it seems that since the energy crisis of the 1970's, and the big time sell out of the babyboomer generation we have forgotten about these dreams.

The Jetsons was the space age version of the sitcom/cartoon. The adventures of a family trying to live though the day to day grind of the future. Of course it's dated in a lot of ways, but it notes that some things will never change about interpersonal relationships, but that the life that will be for all of us will be filled with marvels and the adventure of exploring a world beyond that of the earth. Sure it's a cartoon and it's silly and all that, but it really reflected a mind set that was common that the future was bright and that we would push out from our world and explore, build and look to new worlds.

Now maybe I'm just a cynic, but I don't hear these dreams on the lips of our young people any more. I hear the desire to own, to get high, to be intoxicated and to feel good all the time. I guess that the Dead Kenndys were right 'give me convenience or give me death', how sad.

notes:

IKEA opening report: Man these MN people act like aimless sheep. Ok it's only 10 or 15 % but what a pain in the ass, it's a store not a reason to live.

I got the new Hives CD, the only major label release that I have been looking forward to.. review to come when I absorb the disc.

my Sister is going to be in town for the weekend, I haven't told her about SG, and I don't know that she's going to approve.... oh well....

in addition:

I just watched the Documentry Spellbound and I find that it tied in with my eariler comments about the hope for the future.

first off I have not fixed my spelling errors in this section for a reason... that I can't spell. This has been the bane of my educational exigstance since I was dignosed with a learning disability in the 3rd grade. For the most part I was allowed to keep a level of annomity about this disability until I hit the 5th grade... ok that's not quite true, my so called peers knew that I was excused from the class room to go somewhere else, and I think that more than a few knew that I didn't have to participate in spelling with them. I did however have to work on my spelling 3 times a week with a special education teacher who also worked with me on sounding words out. of course when I was studying Swedish I found out that all that training was making it hard for me to learn to speak and write Swedish... anyway.

when I was in the 5th grade my teacher, who had lots and lots of issues, would hold class room spelling bees. I was often times told that I could sit these out, and would remain at my desk while the rest of the class, and I do mean everyone, would line up for the spelling bee. The times that I lined up with everyone else I was either given softball words or ultra difficult words, and often was the first person back at my desk. This of course was just another faliure in the eyes of my peers in a year that was very hard for me....

but spellbound, If you haven't seen it, it's about the national spelling bee. It's about kids who work hard and push themselves and find a little bit of fame and success in doing something that few care about. Watching the film I couldn't help but notice that almost all of the kids that they profiled projected a nerd quality that I know , that I understand and that I remember from my own time in school. That marginalization because they are smart, or into something that others didn't undeerstand or value.

another DVD I watched recently was the first disc of the Disney Tomarrowland series, that talked about man's future in space. These films/ TV shows were created in the mid to late 50's and were as much about that space/future hope as the Jetsons was, and we seem to have lost that. Who want's to be an astronaut anymore? Who wants to unlock the mystery of how we are going to settle on the moon? and where is the payoff in that?

I don't know, and that makes me sad...... frown

Maybe someday I'll get around to writing that comic series I have been dreaming of... This is Not the America I was Promised..... I know the reason why, too many people are too greedy....

enough, thanks for reading.

I'm with ya, I think the kids are all spoiled brats these days. I hate the instant gratification nature of society, everybody thinks they deserve to have everything handed to them before the thought has finished forming in their head that they know what they want.
