I have a new obsession.

Driving the entire length of Florida in order to get home is a gloomy affair. It takes about 7 hours, allowing for stops to pick up iced tea and any bathroom visits that may be required as a result, and around this time of the year, it's more or less one enormous, scary thunderstorm the entire way. So I've decided that taking pictures of our spectacular lightning displays will be my new hobby. I didn't realize just how small the multi-shot function on my phone made the pictures, so they're a bit crap right now... but I'm in the market for a new digital camera, so they'll get better.

Why am I in the market for a new digital camera? Because Marie has invited me to come along with her and Dru and her friend Scarlett when they go to Costa Rica for Dru's birthday in early September. She's got it all planned out, tickets bought, hotel reservations made... she's shown me pictures, and it is absolutely gorgeous. According to her, there are sloths in the backyard, and monkeys patrol the beaches to steal your unguarded belongings. Central American Rainforests, here we come.

and with my own camera, I don't have to worry about taking pictures the way somebody else wants them taken.

my mother doesn't understand why I patently refuse to use the flash at times like these.

any time I'm in charge of the camera, there are 3 kinds of pictures that need to be taken: posed, both with flash and without, and candid, for which I always use whatever light is naturally available. the result is so much warmer, and the overlong exposure makes the picture feel more like a memory than a photograph. I feel like I can hear the clink of the glasses and the hum of conversation. Is that sappy and cliche? It's true, in any case. They remind me of the old Sesame Street audio slideshows, where they would show a progression of photos with sound that was recorded during whatever event was taking place. I assume that my preference must be tied to that, fundamentally. Sesame Street was all about behavioral conditioning. That's why Cookie Monster is on a forced diet these days. My mother is helping me protest this indignity by making me eat delicious brownies.

And to give you some idea of how much like a surrealist Rockwell painting my family can be, we ate those brownies while watching a video of my father's recent Lasik surgery, in which the doctors shave a layer of his eyeball jelly while a jazzy Benny Goodman tune plays in the background.

And after Benny? Guantanamera.

No shit.

That is great that your family is Norman Rockwell. So many people dont have that. Count yourself lucky. I hate driving in the rain. The fact that you can take photographs while driving is well...inspiring.
