this seems like a really good time to talk about our imminent deaths.

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/woalert.php?lang=eng

this is how we while away the down time at work. it started out as sort of a minor curiosity and has blossomed into a grisly fascination. you can sit and watch:
- a bird flu outbreak in Padang, Indonesia
- a bus crash in India that kills 17 members of a bridal party
- a tropical storm brewing off the coast of Madagascar
- a landslide along a central South American river, leading to a small tidal wave that sent crocodiles onto the tin roofs of a village along its coast
- an outbreak of e.coli in Orange County, California

I've been keeping tabs on a volcano on the coast of ANTARCTICA, currently code Orange ("Volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain, OR eruption is underway with no or minor volcanic-ash emissions [ash-plume height specified, if possible]," from the Alaska Volcano Observatory website). It doesn't always report on the specifics, but the alerts are more or less up-to-the-minute.

Presently, the site is showing a great deal of seismic activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_ring_of_fire). roughly 27 volcanoes at code Orange, earthquakes of moderate magnitude (between 4.9 and 5.5), most occurring within the last 24 hours.

being largely an emergency and disaster report site, it's a pretty morbid way to pass the time.

almost certainly not unrelated, I woke up this morning and decided that when I die, I want my cremated remains to be divvied up 8 ways. 7 portions of me will be placed in the care of 7 friends and family members and then transported by plane, train, or automobile to some significant spot on each of the 7 continents. the remaining portion will be shot into outer space and scattered.

I also decided that I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For has a claim in my top 3 favorite songs of all time.

I'm officially moved into my new apartment. many of you can expect letters or packages from the new address sometime in the near future, all of them containing one of the 100 new business cards I need to give away.

the bulk of this entry is too dark.

here to balance the scales:

- Daily Lit, the subscription literature service. a free site offering subscriptions to books in the public domain (and more recently, books available under Creative Commons licenses), serialized and sent to you by e-mail or as a feed in your internet browser.

- the informational diagram-packed music video for Norwegian band Royksopp's Geico-licensed tune "Remind Me."

- and, lifted a few weeks ago from either boing boing or digg, peeps on horseback.

lemuria:
