a good first impression of Los Angeles is the view of the freeway through the windshield of your car. I'd say 60-70% of a day out and about looks more or less like that. the good news is that depending on where you are, it's a hell of a nice view.

landed at Long Beach airport yesterday morning. got some sleep on the flight, but not much. mostly watched The Hunt For Red October and an episode of original star trek without sound - Captain Kirk versus The Hippies (the Enterprise is serenaded and soon overtaken by a small group of pinko-commie-subversive flower children looking to expand their minds one some planetary paradise somewhere). my baggage claim experience felt like an internment camp scene from a world war II movie. all of us waiting around outside crowded inside a perimeter fenced with razor wire while huge PA systems broadcast easy-listening tunes broken with the occasional soothing announcement about loading and unloading in the white zones.

Lonnie met me there and we got some grub at a little breakfast place on the water off Shoreline Drive. from there we took a look around Santa Monica Pier and then she gave me a quick tour of Burbank Town Center before she had to go to work. I spent the hours from 4:30 to midnight exploring on foot. IKEA is a theme park. I did the rounds; tested the mattresses in ModelBedroomLand, looked at my reflection in the shiny taps in ModelKitchenLand, and rode the futons in CollapsableSofaLand. had dinner in their FREAKING RESTAURANT. sweedish meatballs with red-jacket potatoes, cranberry sauce, and lingonberry mousse for $5.50. possibly the cheapest eats in all of LA, and very tasty. finished the evening at Barnes & Noble where I read Vonnegut's Man Without A Country and some of the short stories in Heller's Catch if Catch Can, and then the last 2 hours reading Travels with Charley in a quiet corner at Gordon Biersch where, because of a misplacement of identification, I was unable to get a beer. I did, however, drink some very nice water and eat some very nice steamed veggies so that they'd let me keep the booth.

Lonnie's at work again today, so I thought I'd give some LA peeps a call and see where I could get on foot around here. I have Mike Doughty's Haughty Melodic to keep me company. I've plastered the stickers in my car and I've worn the button, but for some reason, I'd never listened to the album before now.

it's phenomenal, in case you were wondering.
