The Detective is a novel written by Roderick Thorp in which New York police officer Joe Leland investigates the murder of a wealthy businessman's gay son. The book was made into a movie in 1968 starring Frank Sinatra.
Thorp wrote a sequel to the book in 1979 called Nothing Lasts Forever. Joe Leland flies out to visit his daughter in California and winds up having to rescue her and 30 other hostages from a psychotic German terrorist who seizes control of the 40-story skyrise in which she works.
This novel was adapted for the screen and made into a movie in 1988. You may have seen it.
I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of the book for years, but for some reason I never thought to check the library. TJ picked it up for me and brought it by the office, so I'm reading it now. I think I expected something much cheaper than what I've gotten so far. It's pleasantly surprising.
