In another possible world, I didn't drop my Folklore class.

The extra workload inspired me to really bust my ass and stick to a rigorous schedule. I didn't do as well in metaphysics, but I wasn't as slack with the material in 19th Century Philosophy and Literary Expressions of Popular Culture, either, resulting in a higher average grade. I continued to walk to class every day but had no time to do laundry, so by this time, I'd have been more fit, but far smellier. Not driving to class every day would have kept me from eating at New Leaf, but I'd have saved a few hundred dollars on gas and parking tickets. I'd have never felt the need to attempt to cut half an inch off of the hair in the back to cheer myself up, so I wouldn't have been disappointed with the results which set me back a month or two of steady growth. Instead of staying up all night for a week studying and writing late papers, I'd have been alert and fully rested, and I'd be going to see March of the Penguins at the dollar movie theater tonight.

Still, in yet another possible world in which I didn't drop my Folklore class, the extra pressure of having to put together a thesis research project pushed me into a nervous breakdown. I overcaffeinated myself one evening studying for midterms and got into a car accident outside All Saints Cafe, killing myself and a young girl who'd just put the finishing touches on her first school paper.

If we assume that for all people there are an infinite number of better worlds and an infinite number of worse, it feels like it ought to be fair to say that whichever world you live in - the median of those others - is the fairest and the best.

and so I'm thankful.
