Another tale from the "nothing is easy" files...

So last week we had the repairman out to "fix" the washer. $129 later he said it needed a new motor which would cost $500, but since the unit was 11 years old, it hardly seemed worth doing. Off to Best Buy for a new washer and dryer (why bother with a 11 year old dryer?)

I built my house and installed all my own appliances. Back then I was younger, stronger and more flexible. At the time it was the easiest route to vent the dryer through the floor. After a long discussion with the salesman, it was determined that the dryer we had chosen could be vented through the bottom. I expected it to be delivered that way, so we set up delivery and installation. It was also understood that they would haul away the old ones.

My wife decided she didn't want to have to bend over so much to do the laundry, so we bought the optional pedestals. I figured I was going to have to cut up the drawer in the pedestal to get the vent through. As much as I didn't want to have to deal with any of it, I resigned myself to the modification.

They called yesterday to set up the delivery time, and the guy gave me the number for the installation service. Best Buy uses a contractor with licensed plumbers for the gas hookups. I called and told him about the vent. He did some checking and called me back and said I needed a special kit. I called LG and found out the kit was $85, and decided there was going to be a change of plan.

The delivery guys show up this morning. I looked at the dryer and just as I suspected, back vent, not bottom. They disconnected and hauled out the old washer, then announced that they couldn't take the dryer because the plumber has to disconnect the gas. FUCK THAT!!! I find my wrench, and I'm just about to unscrew the coupling, when my wife asks, "Did you turn off the gas?" Oopsy-fuck.blush

I had them hook up the washer, which I now have to unhook, just so I can get back in the corner to cut away the floor for the new dryer vent. I ended up going to the hardware store to pick up the few parts I needed to do the whole thing my self. I called the plumber and cancelled, and will have to go back to Best Buy to return their overpriced vent kit and get credit for the install. For about $30 in parts, I'm gonna save $250.

So much for having someone else do everything. I guess I had better get started.

And you wonder why I have a tattoo that says NOTHING IS EASY.wink

I could have had about 30 things. Don't worry there will be more. One of my personal favorites since I've worked there is "with enough lubricant you can stick a bowling ball up a gnat's ass".

What effort to put an appliance in eh? I'm not handy at all, I would have had no clue what to do in that situation.

One of the things I think I missed not having a dad growing up was how to fix a lot of things. I mean, give me a book, I'll figure it out, but just random handyman jobs I never really got to do.
