So in breaking from the theme of the workout blog, that I haven't exactly been updating anyway, I bring to you news of my latest adventure "What not to do during a thunderstorm."

So last night Carla and I were sitting around my apartment watching an episode of Planet Earth (a pretty amazing BBC documentary). There was a bit of a thunderstorm outside but it didn't seem like much, wasn't really able to hear any thunder at least. It was getting a bit late so when the episode finished up we headed out to take Carla home. We left the apartment, gott into the elevator and headed for the basement to go get my car. We weren't really paying a lot of attention at this point as it was only the two of us in the elevator and so we didn't need to watch for our floor.

But then, part way through our elevator ride we heard a huge crack of thunder and all the lights in the elevator went out.

The backup power cut in a few seconds later, thankfully keeping us from being stuck in the dark, unfortunately the backup power isn't enough to power the elevators themselves and so we had the pleasure of being stuck in an elevator for the better part of an hour.

Now with the elevators being in the central core of the building as they tend to be we had no cell reception and so couldn't even call anyone for help. After about 15 minutes of intermittently pressing the emergency call button, which in this case is merely a loud buzzer and doesn't actually place any kind of emergency call for you, we finally hear some people calling into the elevator shaft telling us that they've called 911 and that a fire and rescue crew was on the way to get us out.

Thus began the waiting, and with the waiting my introduction to a new weight loss program that I have dubbed the Elevator Sauna Experience (not very catchy I know). You see, when the power went out it turned off all of the ventilation fans and yesterday was a rather hot day. We then got to spent the next half an hour sitting in the elevator until we finally hear a fireman yell down the shaft that they had arrived and would have us out shortly.

After another 10 minutes or so the doors slide open to reveal that we are stuck halfway between the ground floor and the basement. We were literally seconds away from being out of the elevator when the power went out. The firemen proceed to help us out of the elevator, we thank them, and then head to the parkade to see if there is enough light to drive out and take Carla home.

We step into the pitch black of the parkade, decide to head back upstairs to find a flashlight and then before we can actually take a step back towards the stairwell the parkade lights flicker and the power comes back on.

And so, that is the story of how I spent the very nearly entirety of last nights hour long power outage trapped in an elevator.
sgtsnarky:
At least you weren't stuck in the elevator with a madman on the loose in your building. It could've ended really scary like.

biggrin

Glad to hear you're okay. Did you guys play 20 Questions?
