Indigoboys mix CD for the recent SG Chicago CD Swap: (Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves)
1 A New Day (Is Here At Last) JC Davis
A nice funky instrumental to start things off proper.
2. Daylight Aesop Rock
My favorite hip hop MC, along with Slug (Atmosphere).
3. Enjoy The Silence Pat MacDonald
An interesting Depeche Mode cover from Texas native MacDonald. Im not sure anything else he has done is worth checking out.
4. Happiness Is A Warm Gun The Breeders
A haunted cover of the classic Beatles tunes no doubt fueled by lots of good drugs.
5. Honkys Ladder Afghan Whigs
Its amazing how fresh and relevant this still sounds over 10 years later. A ridiculously underappreciated band.
6. Hound Dog Big Mama Thornton
This version puts the Elvis one to shame.
7. If Im In Luck, I Might Get Picked Up Betty Davis
Ms. Davis has the distinction of being married to Miles at one point in time. Rumor has it the marriage ended after she engaged in an affair with none other than Jimi Hendrix. Her impressive stable of partners obviously rubbed off on her own music. This track features members of Sly & The Family and a young, pre-Journey Neal Schon.
8. It Takes Heiruspecs
The sound of this Minneapolis hip hop act is what would be akin to Slug fronting the Roots.
9. Lets Get Married Juliana Hatfield
Although Im not much of a fan of Julianas voice, the sarcastic lyrics and catchy melodies of this particular song make her girly monotone tolerable.
10. Livin For The City Dirtbombs
What can I say I love cover songs. This is one of the best.
11. Nice To Know You Candy Butchers
If Candy Butchers frontman Mike Violas voice sounds familiar, it may be because you heard it on endless repeat during the movie That Thing You Do (he supplied the lead vocals for the title track). This New York native pulled off an impressive feat when he crafted this breezy California pop tune. The best song Jackson Browne never wrote.
12. Open To Ideas Faces
Its nearly impossible to imagine a time when cartoon-faced Rod Stewart was a soulful, credible singer. This song provides historical proof of why he became such a pussy magnet a reputation he has been coasting on for the past 30 years.
13. Penny For A Thought Saul Williams
My first exposure to Williams came from the movie Slam, which he co-wrote and starred in. His much anticipated debut album came and went without much notice even though it was full of hard hitting, politically conscious tracks like this.
14. Revolution Get Down The Bellrays
Think Aretha Franklin fronting the MC5 and youll have a good idea of what this soulful garage rock outfit sounds like.
15. Riot In Cell Block Number Nine Wanda Jackson
They dont make raucous country like this anymore.
16. Say Hallelujah Tracy Chapman
This up-tempo eulogy aint your older sisters Fast Car. This is what I want played at my funeral.
17. Science Matt Cook
A little something to cleanse the palette.
18. Seven Nation Army Nostalgia 77
A radically funky take on a White Stripes song.
19. Sick, Sober And Sorry Johnny Bond.
The perfect balance of sad and funny.
20. Tainted Love Gloria Jones
An incredibly soulful rendition of the song Soft Cell built a career out of. You can hear the microphone distorting during the chorus.
21. The First Tegan & Sara
When I first heard this song, I thought it sounded like two Ani Difrancos harmonizing. I was smitten when I discovered this Canadian sister duo was signed to Neil Youngs Vapor Records.
22. When U Were Mine Crooked Fingers
A mellow rendition of this Prince classic takes us out.
